Teaching and Learning

Specialist Programs

Our Specialist Programs include:

Food Technology/ FEAST

In Food Technology students are taught how to become safe, hygienic and competent in a range of cooking processes. Students follow simple and healthy recipes and explore different ingredients, techniques and express preferences. Independence is encouraged and supported during cooking in both the Primary and Secondary kitchens.

Physical Education

Our junior Physical Education Program provides opportunities for students to learn and apply skills with various equipment in the gym. Activity stations and PMP programs allow them to practise their Fundamental Motor Skills and move independently including to action songs. Students work one-on-one with staff to practise skills during weekly Physical Education classes, such as ball handling, athletics and striking, reinforcing their basic movement patterns.

As students grow in their ages and stages, they build their teamwork and fair play capacity. Students learn skills and rules related to specific sports and develop individual and game-based skills while being taught by external coaches. They improve their ability to follow instructions during various fun team-based games. Warm-up segments address areas of fitness, team challenges and hand/eye activities related to the subsequent lessons.

Visual Arts

In Visual Arts, students are provided with opportunities to explore and develop skills to create artworks that express their preferences and ideas, in a dynamic and supportive environment. They are encouraged to create individual and group artworks, and in doing so, build confidence, creativity and have a shared experience. The students’ experiential process is valued as much as the finished artwork, and the use of different tools and mediums are explored to create different artistic expressions. The subject matter of the artwork is driven by topics of interest and events that are relevant to the individual, the community and the world.

Library

During library sessions, students learn about how to turn a page, exploring words and pictures. Through shared reading students explore and discover the beauty of books, picture, fiction and non-fiction and complete snapshots of themes around the books they read.

Sustainability

Sustainability at Officer Specialist School is all about minimising the footprint we make on this earth. Students have fun designing and producing box buildings and robots and explore

issues around beneficial pests in the garden, ocean rescue and plastics in our waterways. Students also learn through reading and small activities.
